TDS - Minerality

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) & Minerality

The TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) value of water tells us how many parts per million (ppm) - or milligrams per litre (mg/l) - are left after the water in question is heated to 180 degrees Celcius, until completely condensed. The minerals in the water cannot evaporate and stay behind. The higher the TDS, the higher the amount of minerals in the water. Water with a very high TDS usually has a more intense taste, a bolder feel and can have an aftertaste.
Regulations regarding TDS vary throughout the world. In the US, bottled water must contain at least 250 mg/l TDS to be labeled as a mineral water. Tapwater has multiple functions (like washing and cleaning) that require it to have a relative low TDS.

The minerality of water can be divided into the following groups:

  • Super low: 0 to 50 ppm
  • Low: 50 to 250 ppm
  • Medium: 250 to 800 ppm
  • High: 800 to 1500 ppm
  • Very high: 1500 ppm and higher
